Landscaping Off A Rug

The last landscape construction project we completed involved converting a front yard from lawn and shrubs to a low-maintenance and drought-tolerant paradise.  The client wanted a tropical themed yard that did not require much effort or water...

When the brown sage grass fills in, it will differentiate the beds more.
While looking for inspiration to design the landscape, I thought about the homeowner's rug... what the?  I know it seems crazy, but it had great lines and shapes that I thought could be applied to the yard.  Plus, I always want to make the yard an extension of the home.  But could something so Bold be pulled off, and should I dare such a thing?  Actually, I was just concerned about whether I could convince the client to trust my idea and vision.  He is super cool and went along with it.  He tells me that a lot of people come by to look at it and he'll watch them from the window as they admire:) it, but the funny thing is they usually get in a disagreement while looking at it.  Apparently, one will like it while the other one isn't bold enough to accept the boldness!  I do want to give a shout-out to Phil at Boething Treeland Farms for helping with the plants.
