We had the opportunity last weekend to go fishing for sharks. A friend of ours catches sharks and rays and sells them on the internet all over the world. We caught about 8 sharks and 2 rays in a couple of hours out in the San Francisco Bay.
I did not realize how easy it was to catch a shark. We dropped anchor in a deep channel in the bay and used squid on a barbless hook. The line setup we used had the fishing line threaded through the weight's eye hole, with the hook on the end of the line (you can see it up close on the picture of the ray). This allowed the shark to take and swim away with the bait giving us ample time to 'set the hook' (pull really hard on the pole to hook the shark in the mouth).
I've been fishing all my life, but this was the first time I was fishing for sharks. While the biggest one we caught was about 3 feet long, it was still a 'man vs. wild' moment grabbing the muscle shark and pulling out the hook with our hands. All this while trying to keep our balance as we were rocked by the ocean waves. A little dramatic description, but it was a manly experience.
